Saquinavir (Protease inhibitor)

A Phase III randomized, placebo-controlled study that will compare the safety, tolerance, and efficacy of saquinavir alone and in combination with AZT and ddC.

Thymopentin (Immune modulator)

A Phase III randomized, placebo-controlled study that will evaluate the safety and efficacy of thymopentin in asymptomatic, HIV-infected individuals receiving monotherapy (AZT, ddI or D4T) or combination therapy (AZT/ddI or AZT/ddC).

No history of antiretroviral use or no more than 16 weeks of treatment with AZT.

Must have history of at least 6 continuous months of AZT monotherapy which was tolerated.

Participants will be assigned to 1 of 4 possible drug combinations. Study duration is a minimum of 80 weeks. A continuation study with open-label saquinavir is available under certain conditions.

Thymopentin is an immune modulator which has been shown in previous studies to be more effective in reducing HIV disease progression when used with AZT than AZT monotherapy. Study duration is a maximum of two years. Open-label treatment with thymopentin is available under certain conditions.

(Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor)

A Phase I, open-label, randomized, cross-over study that will compare the pharmacokinetics and safety of single doses of AZT, 3TC, and a new reverse transcriptase inhibitor, 1592U89, when administered alone and in twoand threedrug combinations in individuals with HIV.

Vesnarinone (Quinolinone Derivative)

A Phase I study that will determine the safety and tolerance of rising doses of vesnarinone in individuals with HIV.

No use of antiretroviral therapy within 4 weeks prior to study entry and throughout the course of the study.

1592U89 has demonstrated activity against HIV in vitro when combined with AZT, ddI, and ddC. The study requires that participants stay at our facility in Pittsburgh for 15 days. For those outside of the region, transportation will be provided. Participants will be compensated $1,500.00 upon completion of the study.

Vesnarinone is a quinolinone derivative used for the treatment of congestive heart failure. It has been

shown to have antiviral activity against HIV in vitro. A two-week inpatient stay must be completed at Novum's Pittsburgh site, followed by 14 weeks of twice-weekly follow-up visits. Participants will be paid $3,000.00 upon completion of the study.
